What is G.net

Picture2G.NET is Consolidated’s 1 gigabit broadband service that will meet our customers needs into the future.

How fast is G.net

G.NET is up to 1 Gigabit downstream and up to 1 Gigabit upstream.  Check out our Internet Speed Comparison to find out how it stands up to other speeds!

What is 1 Gigabit or 1000 Megabits?

1 Gigabit is 10 times faster than 100 Megabits.  You may see this speed referenced as Gigabit, 1 Gig, 1G or 1000 Meg.

Why do I need Gigabit broadband?

As the number of broadband connected devices grows, so does your need for each device to have higher speeds.  The high speed that G.NET provides will allow users to :

  • Have more devices connected without sacrificing speed
  • Achieve higher cumulative download/upload speeds
  • Enhance your overall experience while using the internet
  • Stream video with little or no buffering
  • Nearly instant access to web and social media sites
  • Working from home to access your office network/computer using VPN (Virtual Private Network)
  • Gaming applications and playing online games like Xbox live or PlayStation plus

How do I get G.net

Call our toll free number 1-888-225-5282 and speak with a Customer Service Representative to find out if the service is available in your area.

Where is it available?

G.NET will be released first in the fiber served areas of Dickinson, Hettinger, Belfield, Mott, Amidon, Bowman, New England, Regent, Scranton, South Heart, Dodge, Dunn Center, Reeder, Halliday, Manning with more communities to follow.

How is G.net Provided?

Picture4The service is provided over our FTTH (Fiber to the Home) network.  This fiber network is using the latest technologies to provide the highest speeds possible.

What is needed for G.net?

We will provide a 1 gigabit Ethernet connection to your home or business.  You will need a router that is capable of up to 1 Gigabit to achieve the highest speeds.  These can be purchased with the service or you can provide your own.  The preferred method of connecting devices is via Cat5e or Cat6 wired connection to make sure that you get the best performance out of your service.

How about Wi-Fi?

To achieve the highest connection speeds possible, the best way to connect is directly wired to your router.  Wi-Fi connections are always slower than wired connections.  Your wireless devices will be limited by:

  • The device’s wireless technology
  • Your router’s wireless technology
  • Any interference from other wireless devices that may be in or around your router or home

To achieve the highest connection speeds over Wi-Fi today your router and device would need to support the 802.11ac standard.

What is the max speed expected on tablets, smartphone, etc?

The max speeds on each of these devices will be limited to their max Wi-Fi sync-rate with your router.  This sync-rate is determined by the wireless capabilities of your devices and router.  Also, the sync-rate is based on the signal level of the Wi-Fi service.  Average speeds for this type of device should be between 10-60 megabits.

Speed Tests and Performance

Picture3When you do a speed test to one of our servers you should see results in the 500 – 850 megabits if you are using a wired computer connected directly to a router that is capable of 1 gigabit.  These numbers are lower than 1000 megabits for multiple reasons depending on number, setup and  performance of the following:

  • Connected PC(s) – even if a device has a gigabit Ethernet (1000 Base-T) card it does not guarantee that the device can process data fast enough
  • Router – Needs to support 1 Gig
  • Software Applications running in background
  • Web browser / Browser Plug-In (JAVA / Flash)
  • Actual throughput will always be lower due to overheads in the Ethernet transportation of the broadband service
  • Internet limitations and congestion at the time of the test
  • Website/Server Limitations - Most sites on the internet protect themselves by limiting the amount of bandwidth that any one user can consume from their site
